Land Manager Regions

Land Manager Regions are based on bioregions, units of land that have similar geology, landforms, plants and animals, and therefore production characteristics and management issues.

Most Land Manager Regions correspond exactly to bioregions. Two regions are treated differently because of their distinct management arrangements:

  • Tiwi-Cobourg - The Tiwi Islands are treated as a separate region, the remainder of this bioregion has been added to Arnhem Land
  • Kakadu - a separate region has been created for this National Park

The following bioregions have been grouped to form larger regions:

  • Arnhem Land (Arnhem Coast, Arnhem Plateau, Central Arnhem, and the mainland part of Tiwi-Cobourg)
  • Darwin-Daly (Darwin Coastal, Daly Basin and Pine Creek)
  • Ord-Victoria (Victoria Bonaparte and Ord Victoria Plain)

Across state/territory boundaries:

Most regions are accessed through the state/territory they in which they predominate

  • MT Isa Region (accessed through Queensland)
  • Queensland Gulf  (accessed through Queensland)
  • NT Gulf (accessed through NT)

Bioregions that are equally represented in two jurisdictions have been divided into two:

  • Ord-Victoria (shown separate in Western Australia and Northern Territory)
  • Mitchell Grass Downs (called Mitchell Grass in Queensland, and Barkly in the Northern Territory)
